The seventh night of Bowlive V at the Brooklyn Bowl started off on a more mellow vibe than the previous night openers. Bowlive V has produced rocking sets by The London Souls and Leroy Justice and the wonderful, jazzy Alan Evans Trio but now it was time for a chick flick of musical sorts.

Sonya Kitchell made her Bowlive debut with Jesske Hume on bass, Nate Wood on guitar and the amazing Neal Evans on drums and keyboards. Neal Evans on drums, you say? Yes, drums! When Neal is not playing with Lettuce or Soulive, he holds down the drums for Sonya Kitchell.

Both Soulive and Sonya Kitchell were signed under Velour Music Group for a while but both have since graduated to new management. This explains their affiliation but there was a larger reason behind choosing Kitchell to open for the last night of Bowlive. Kitchell’s musical resume is filled with gems but she is most noted for touring with Herbie Hancock in 2008 after she helped him on his record River: The Joni Letters.

This set was was a defining characteristic of a Bowlive Residency. Was it what everyone wanted? I don’t think. Was it it as jamming as it could have been for a Friday night opener? Not really. However, Soulive enjoys changing up the game, introducing us to their favorite artists, mixing up the genres and giving exposure to the music world in whatever way they can. And please, do not get me wrong, Sonya Kitchell is a beautiful songstress and writer. I remember hearing Kitchell on Pandora about seven years ago singing “Let Me Go,” off her Words Came Back To Me album which was released on my 26th birthday. I bought it the next day. However, I am a lyric-loving female and the audience was filling up with dude after dude.

Kitchell’s band, was dressed all in white, definitely an artistic expression. White, almost as pure as her sweet, hopeful voice. Her set consisted completely of new tunes, some off the new, yet-to-be-released album, some even newer and some not recorded yet.  There was a nice treat when Marco Benevento came out and played piano for her tune, “Family,” a beautiful melodic tune. “This Feeling” was truly felt with Sonya Kitchell‘s effervescent vocals, Marco’s twinkling keys and Alan Evan’s consistent drumming.

Overall, Sonya Kitchell is a silent but deadly rager. A little grungy, a little edgy, a lot of sex appeal and her high registry and ethereal voice was captivating. She is soft, yet intense and today, she continues to impress the underground music community stretching those high notes and flipping between genres with every song.

The intensely dedicated members of Soulive, drummer Alan Evans, keyboardist Neal Evans and guitarist Eric Krasno, stomped out an audience favorite, “Shaheed,” to open the first set. It was Friday night at the Brooklyn Bowl and if anyone knew what that meant, it was this trio. They brought the fire. The “Swamp” brought out the Shady Horns and there was just some gnarly, funky, connected vibing happening on stage. It got so deep that Alan Evans, for the second time this week, broke his snare drum.

“Brother Soul” showcased saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, who got a jumping ovation because everyone was already standing and as his solo peaked the crowd could be seen jumping in rhythm to his playing. This was a “GROOVER,” as John Scofield would say. Light Technician Victor Cornette supported the music wonderfully with his light work, uplifting the audience that much more. Next on deck was “Reverb” into “Aladdin.” Sonya Kitchell was on vocals in line with the Shady Horns while Neal musically defined the namesake of the song.

Jimi Hendrix’s “3rd Stone from the Sun” and Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Lenny” was next and The Shady Horns exited the stage. This is always an epic pairing of tunes but when you add in a child guitar prodigy, who only turned 11 last week, things get nuts. The amazing Brandon “TAZ” Niederauer made a big name for himself on Jam Cruise this year. Here it was now that this virtuoso guitar player I had heard so much about was going to show off his skills next to one of the best guitarists in the world.

“Everyone pulled out the Fire for night 7. Taz. Wow. Alan and Neal said it perfectly. Music starts in schools and our support needs to go there. Taz is a prime example of pure unadulterated raw talent. Was really humbling to hear him play and shed his soul on all of us. Can’t wait to say “I heard him play when he was 11″ to my kids one day.” ~ A.L.

When they broke into Hendrix’s “Manic Depression,” it was slow going but then Taz just took it away. Krasno gestured to the sound guy to turn Taz’s sound up. Measure after measure, Taz just built and built upon himself, delivering his solo so intensely, yet wearing such a stoic expression. Not even a little smile. Totally in his head. Everyone’s jaws were on the ground and there were moments when the audience was just screaming in shock and awe. Taz sounds and acts like a seasoned veteran of the stage and watching him grow up musically is going to be a wonderful experience so keep your eyes peeled.

Alan Evans called out for “Felix” and shouts, “Where’s Marco?” The unannounced bassist Felix Pastorius was introduced by Alan and special guest Marco Benevento joined the stage. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better Felix Pastorius shows up to play some cranking bass for us. Felix is a fantastic musician in his own right but it would be foolish not to mention that he is the son of the late virtuoso jazz fusion bass player from Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius. Many members of the audience could be heard talking about the excitement of seeing Jaco’s son play at Bowlive.  Felix did not disappoint adding a groovy jazzy bass sound to the Soulive mix.

The Shady Horns were back. The set-list listed Jaco’s soulful “The Chicken” next but they nixed that and went into Billy Cobham‘s “Stratus” instead.  Both songs are famous jazz fusion standards but only one made the cut for what turned out to be a psychedelic mash-up of musicians, literally the definition of fusion.

Alan Evans handled the vocals for the Stevie Wonder cover, “Jesus Children of America,” while his feel-good drumming kept the beat.  “The Dump” is actually a Lettuce tune off their first album, Outta Here, which really brought the crowd up. However, it was when Marco Benevento came out for “The ‘In’ Crowd,” a song composed in 1964 largely for pianos and horns, when the stage might as well have caught on fire from the heat. Marco laid down a beautiful melody of keys while each member of the horn section soloed starting with James Casey, to Ryan Zoidis and then Eric Bloom. Bloom’s trumpet solo was reminiscent of Dizzy Gillespie and Casey brought it all home. At one point, Alan Evans pointed out that Marco was wearing a Soulive shirt and the crowd cheered.

“Marco has a special relationship with his piano and the audience. The bond is not to be taken lightly. His sensitive side is what makes him talk to the piano and relate to the audience.” ~ H.H

Miami’s acclaimed pedal steel guitarist, Roosevelt Collier from The Lee Boys, was the next guest for the evening.  He began by to sitting in on The Beatles’ “Revolution.” It was a special treat for Bowlive fans to see this uniquely talented musician play his equally unique instrument, the lap steel guitar.  The Bowl shrieked with the lovely sounds echoing from Rosie’s instrument. Collier was also in town for an Allman Brothers Band after-party gig at B.B. Kings Blues Club in Times Square the following night.  There was wonderful playfulness between Neal Evans and Collier. Marco was in his own world crushing so hard. It’s quite possible that Marco gets better with every note he plays. Roosevelt added a fantastic layer of sound with his lap steel-guitar as he and Krasno battled it out in a full on jam session for the ages. Pure hot-sauce.

Soulive added another piece of musical history to the Bowlive run when, with Roosevelt Collier and Marco Benevento’s help, they jammed out their first ever Elton John tune in Bowlive history: “Benny and The Jets!” What a crowd pleaser. Sonya Kitchell was back on vocals, in line with the Shady Horns and then Marco got up from his rig and dangled the microphone over the heads of those in the front row. “Just these guys!” said Marco and the audience joined in on the biggest sing-a-long of the run. The funny man continued to swing the microphone around heads before going back to his keyboards to have a duel with Collier.

The magic continued with “My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Soulful Strut.” What more is there to say that I haven’t already said. Classic after classic, this group of musicians, all seasoned jamming artists, continued to slay the audience with solo after solo. Jam after jam. Collier and Krasno continued to duel it out on the strings while the Evans brothers held down the rhythm so tightly. Audience members had their hands extended towards the sky as if they were worshiping to their gods. Their Gods of Rock!

For the next tune, it was fun to see Marco opened it up with the famous John Bonham count-in, “We’ve done four already but now we’re steady and then they went: One, Two, Three, Four.” BOOM!!!! The audience was immediately washed away by a rousing rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean.” It’s particularly nice to hear this tune performed during Bowlive with Marco because Led Zeppelin doesn’t have a keyboardist in their band, making this arrangement unique.

The set was supposed to end there but it was Friday night and Soulive was on fire. So, they pulled out Encore #1 with Beatles’ tune, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” Ironically, on this day in 1984, part of Central Park in New York was renamed Strawberry Fields in honor of John Lennon.

The stage empties for about 60 seconds. At that point, Alan Evans is back on the microphone stating, “We were going to end the set but we have some more surprises y’all, all the way from the Beacon Theatre, Oteil and Kofi Burbridge.” Eric Krasno leans into the microphone with a huge grin and says, “Burbridge Brothers in the building!” Oteil Burbridge has been the bassist for The Allman Brother’s Band since 1997 and his brother, Kofi, has been playing flute and keys for many bands on the jam scene for years as well.  Hearing Kofi’s flute in the mix of “So Live!,” “Cash’s Dream,” and “Nubian Lady” was stunning. He fluttered through the songs, bouncing back and forth between the piano and his flute, both instruments he dominates.

During “Cash’s Dream,” the Shady Horns joined the stage while Oteil Burbridge really let it rip on his bass. Oteil guided the song to a really spacey place. Victor Cornette used the lights to enhance the mood and there it was, the pinnacle of the evening with Ryan Zoidis adding effects to his horn, bringing it that much higher. In the end, it was just one epic extended solo, each musicians playing off each other and feeling the family vibe super hard. People were jumping on their feet with both hands in the air. Just a full on Jam Session between friends and as we danced with our own friends in the audience, it was a great way to end a Friday night.  Thank you Soulive, Roosevelt, Marco, Oteil, Kofi, Sonya and all the amazing musicians that made last night another night for the books.

Bowlive III: Night Ten – Finale Recap for Soulive w/ Ledisi, Derek Trucks and The London Souls ~ Extended Review + Media (03.10.12)

After nine nights of warming up, Soulive members Eric KransoNeal Evans and Alan Evans tore the roof off the Brooklyn Bowl Saturday night for the final night of their 3rd annual ten-night residency, Bowlive. Over the course of the last two weeks, Soulive presented their audience with talented guests from across the musical spectrum. Virtuoso guitarists such as jazz legend John Scofield, southern blues rocker Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), and the hard-bopping Warner Brothers artist Mark Whitfield created slaying duets with guitarist Eric Krasno. Renowned bassists Oteil Burbridge (The Allman Brothers Band) and George Porter, Jr. (The Meters) rocked the stage, adding to the cool bass keys Neal Evans plays so strikingly. Hip-hop drummer ?uestlove (The Roots), experimental percussionist Billy Martin (MMW) and world beat drummer Luke Quaranta took their turns leading the rhythm when the smoother than smooth Soulive drummer Alan Evans stepped aside to play rhythm guitar.

Guest vocalists Nigel Hall, Allen Stone, Jennifer Hartswick and Alecia Chakour brought their own style of strength and soul to the mic, Citizen Cope and Alice Smith sang an eclectic mix of blues, laid-back rock and folk while Rhazel and Ledisi delivered beat boxing and R&B/Soul into the eager ears of their audience. As well, for two night and two full sets, Royal Family recordings artists Lettuce, consisting of guitarist Adam Smirnoff, drummer Adam Deitch (Break Science), bassist ED “Jesus” Coomes, and The Bowlive horns, seared the stage with their urban funk flavor.

The Bowlive Horns, consisting of saxophonist James Casey, trumpeters Eric Bloom and Matt Owens and tenor saxophonist Ryan Zoidis were joined over the course of the run by numerous big name brass players.  Trombonist Sam “Big Sam” Williams (Big Sam’s Funky Nation), flautist/saxophonist Karl Denson (Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe), trumpeters Rashawn Ross (Dave Matthews Band) and Jennifer Hartswick, flautist Kofi Burbrudge (Derek Trucks Band) and wild improvisational saxophonist Skerik, rotated throughout the ten nights creating one of the sickest brass ensembles some have ever seen.

Other surprise guests included virtuoso pianist Eldar and organist Mitch Chakour while DJ Wyllys spun the ones and twos in between the weekend sets. When Soulive didn’t open the show themselves, the one man band, Zach Deputy, Royal Family recording artists The Nigel Hall Band, The Alecia Chakour Band and The London Souls amped the energy of the evening before Soulive took over to lay devastation upon the stage. It has been a two week rage of full on face melting, mind warping, soul filling, gut busting musicianship that accelerated with power each night and with audience members wondering how it could be topped.

Saturday night was the tenth and last night of Bowlive III. The audience, clad in white outfits for the evening’s White-Out Party theme, could be heard whispering their ideas of who the special guests might be. The London Souls, Ledisi and The Royal Family All-Stars were billed which could only mean that a surprise that couldn’t be named was being prepared.

The London Souls opened the evening with their Hendrix-style rock and roll sound. It is quite impossible to remain calm when guitarist Tash Neal, bassist Stu Mahan, and drummer Chris St. Hilaire are slamming away on their instruments.  The perfect opening for the end of a great run.

Soulive’s set started off with the super horn heavy, high-energy “El Ron”  However, during “Upright,” some unexpected technical difficulty occurred.  What could have been a rough moment turned into something special. There was three minutes where Alan Evans and his team worked at lightning speed to repair a broken drum head while the remaining members on stage worked together to keep the audience engaged. The audience clapped and cheered, supporting their favorite trio because there was importance in this moment. The band’s talent was exposed so much more during this time as they kept it together. The power from the applause in the audience when Evans’ silver shimmering drum kit was finally lifted in the air and put back in place was outstanding. It was a killer moment in rock n roll, a killer moment in Bowlive History. The trio ripped into the end of “Upright” and kept the momentum UP, UP, UP! They rolled through “Tuesday Night Squad” and Nigel Hall sang on the lively “Too Much” and the beautifully arranged “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears For Fears that segued into Bobby Caldwell’s “Open Your Eyes.”

When Ledisi was brought back on stage for the second night, the crowd exploded. Her R&B flavor had brought such joy to the previous night’s performance and we wanted more. Singing “Love Never Changes” off her Turn Me Loose album, Ledisi unleashed her massively powerful voice upon the audience. Her range and strength were unbelievable as she swiftly scatted her way through “Them Changes,” a Buddy Miles cover off of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys. Tash Neal also performed on this song where he and Krasno playfully raged a duet to end the set.

The second set began as multiple white balloons were tossed out into the audience while Soulive played “One in Seven.” The second technical difficulty of the night occurred as Neal Evans’ clavinet finally gave way after nine nights of solid pounding. Not to miss a beat, Alan Evans began jamming on his kit, delivering a tight an extended drum solo as the back line team fixed the issue.  It was then time for some Beatles love as they played an electric run of “Eleanor Rigby,” “She’s So Heavy” and “Get Back.”

Finally, the last surprise guest of this amazing musical journey was invited on the stage. Southern rock, slide guitarist Derek Trucks (The Allman Brothers Band) walked out on stage with Nigel Hall and Ledisi to perform Sam Cooke’s Civil Rights Era anthem “A Change Gonna Come,”. It was no wonder that while Ledisi and Hall sang with all their passion and Derek Trucks made his guitar cry, audience members began to weep where they stood. The meaning and epic delivery of this song wasn’t lost on a single soul. Soulive flipped the emotional script by following Cooke’s song with the raging Jimi Hendrix’s tune, “Manic Depression!” Derek Trucks, Eric Krasno, Neal Evans and Alan Evans delivered a sick rendition of the song with Trucks and Krasno playing off each other and Trucks taking a ripping solo to end the set.

Before the encore, Brooklyn Bowl owner, Pete Shapiro, came on stage with Rosemary and Lavender plants in his hands. He explained that everyone on the floor was to take a piece of the plants being passed around the audience in hopes that the aroma therapy would help us gather our strength for one last song. Ending their epic ten night run the way they began, our favorite trio, just the three of them, took the stage for “Aladdin.”

Bowlive III is now over, leaving some New Yorkers wondering what to do with themselves.  For two weeks, dedicated fans came to the Brooklyn Bowl to see Neal Evans, Alan Evans and Eric Krasno play their hearts out, touching on every musical genre and playing with many of Americas most talented musicians. Let us give thanks to Soulive for the dedication to their craft and their ability to express it through the creative outlet that is Bowlive. Thanks for their want to educate us on new talent, their need to put new twists on old classics, and their determination to raise the bar each and every night.

Let us give thanks to The Brooklyn Bowl, because without them there would be no Bowlive. Thanks for their wonderful environment, staff and treatment.  For the last 2 weeks the Brooklyn Bowl has been our community’s second home. We’ve feasted on their fantastic Blue Ribbon cuisine, felt at home on their plush leather couches and enjoyed their attentive staff.   Soulive + The Brooklyn Bowl = Bowlive and don’t you forget it!

A change has come to New York City. A change has come to the music community.  Soulive has created something so special in Bowlive.  There is nothing else like it in our scene and it’s through that unique way of doing things that Soulive will remain one of the most influential groups in our music community. Bowlive is the development of a passionate dream that is now reality. After three years, Bowlive is no-doubt a game changer in the music community and will continue to be for many years to come. Thank you Soulive!

Bowlive III: Night Eight – Soulive w/ George Porter Jr., Zach Deputy, Citizen Cope and Alice Smith ~ Extended Review + Media (03.08.12)

For the eighth night, Soulive members, Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans, performed at the Brooklyn Bowl for their annual residency, Bowlive.  In its third year, Bowlive has become one of the most interesting, engaging, educational and smoking residencies in New York City. There are some, who might argue, in America. Each night has gotten heavier, deeper, tighter, and energetically more invested with each guest who joins the stage to breath more life into the already amazing trio.

The Alecia Chakour Band opened last night to a huge crowd. Chakour joined the Bowlive rooster last year.  In the masculine crew that makes up the artists on the Royal Family Records Label, Alecia Chakour is a breath of fresh female energy. With a voice and range as powerful as Aretha Franklin, Chakour rightful deserves to be on stage with the talented musicians who make up Soulive. Chakour’s band members consisted of trumpeter Igmar Thomas (The Cypher), organist Neal Evans (Soulive), bassist and brother Alex Chakour, drummer Miles Arntzen (Antibalas), guitarist Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine), and saxophonist James Casey (6figures).  A highlight was when surprise guest artist Kofi Burbridge (The Derek Trucks band) lent his fluttering flute to the bunch on their new tune, “Surely.” The Alecia Chakour Band is a sick, tight, funky crew who fit right into the rotation of amazing acts that we have so far seen over the two week run.

Soulive members (guitarist Eric Krasno and soul brothers Alan Evans on drums and Neal Evans on clavinet) welcomed numerous guests on stage last night, some announced and some a surprise. This is always to be expected and they never disappoint. “Steppin” was the only song Soulive ever stood alone on stage for. After that, the flood gates opened with Kofi Burbridge jumping in on “El Ron” with the Bowlive Horns: saxophonist James Casey, trumpeter Eric Bloom and tenor saxophonist Ryan Zoidis. Special guest and Brooklyn resident Citizen Cope was next to join the stage to perform his original “Bullet and a Target,” and “Something to Believe In.” Cope’s raw, uncommon chords and proactive lyrics have been recognized and covered by likes of Carlos Santana, Dido, Sheryl Crow and Slipknot. His vocals transformed the bowl into a new vibe, a slower yet passionate part of the set. Alice Smith, the second vocalist billed that night, joined for Cope’s last tunes, “Ain’t Gonna Stand for It” and “107 Degrees.” Alice Smith’s voice melded beautifully with Cope’s the same way that Alecia Chakour’s voice melds perfectly with Nigel Halls. She is aggressive, serious, powerful, and passionate with a 4-octave vocal range and stunning stage presence. Cope exited the stage and Alice Smith, with the Soulive trio backing her, performed Cee Lo Green’s, “Fool For You.” The Bowlive Horns helped closed out the set with “Tuesday Night Squad,”as trumpeter Eric Bloom’s excitement spilled out of his animated solo and Nigel Hall took over the keys.

The second set was dedicated exclusively to the musical power of New Orleans yet contained special guests of varying styles. This was definitely one of the best sets of the entire run. Special guests, world renowned New Orleans bassist George Porter, Jr. (The Meters), drummer ?uestlove (The Roots), Billy Martin (Martin, Medeski and Wood), flautistKofi Burbridge and saxophonist Skerik, out for his third night, piled on stage with Soulive and the Bowlive horns. Covering New Orleans and Meters favorites “Just Kissed My Baby, “Hey Pocky Way,” “Come Fly with Me,” and “Funkify Your Life,” the musical entourage on stage was the definition of a Jam Room. George Porter, Jr. brought such life to the younger musicians who were surrounding him. Each artist took their turn power housing their instruments because Porter believes in the journey of the song and allowing it to unfold, which is exactly what happened on “Africa,” when Skerik took his solo and the classic song turned into a completely different creature.

Experimental jazz percussionist Billy Martin was left to his own devices with a pile of instruments to create sounds with after drumming for “Hey Pokey Way.” Martin is the drumming member of his own jazz, funk trio so his addition to Soulive allowed for experimental sounds that enhanced the layers of the music. “Everything is Everything” closed the set with Nigel Hall on vocals and another night of Bowlive ended, this time without and encore.  ?uestlove’s Bowl Train DJ set saw out the rest of  the night and everyone danced their way through funky, old skool tunes until their weary bodies said enough.


It’s unbelievable to think that the members of Soulive have been going full speed for eight crazy nights. What a testament to their level of stamina, creativity, and their ability to surprise and entice their audience.  For those who can’t make the last two nights, check out the live feed on iClips.net. For those of you with the ability to make it this weekend, you won’t be disappointed. Continuing his New Orleans flavor from last night, special guest George Porter Jr. will be joined by Ledisi with Nigel Hall and Alecia Chakour opening. We can only speculate who the surprise guests will be, but you can be sure they will bring in Bowlive’s final weekend in FULL RAGE!!!

Bowlive III: Night Seven – Soulive w/ Skerik, Kofi Burbridge & Lettuce ~ Extended Review + Media (03.07.12)

Zach Deputy opened night seven of Bowlive III with his Caribbean Ninja Soul flavor. His one-man-band sets always seem to force happiness out of the audience.  He is the purest definition of jolly as he sits behind a massive rig of equipment, creating and layering every element of his songs. Over the past two nights, Deputy has been throwing us all new tunes except for two different versions of “Lincoln Continental.” This would set a theme for a night of new tunes to be delivered by the members of Souilve, Lettuce and Alecia Chakour!

Experimental “saxophonic” saxophonist Skerik and the NY’s premiere urban funk band Lettuce continued into second night as special guests. However, following their formula of the previous week, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, organist Neal Evans and drummer Alan Evans initially hit the stage solo. Alan Evans dominated “Rudy’s Way” with his best drum solo of the run sending the audience UP!  A fixture of Bowlive since its inception, Kofi Burbridge of the Derek Trucks Band surprised the audience when he walked out on stage with his flute for “Cash’s Dream,” a warm, softening addition to such an organ-heavy song.

The Bowlive Horns, consisting of saxophonist James Casey (6figures), tenor saxophonist Ryan Zoidis (Lettuce), and trumpeters Eric Bloom (Diane Birch) and Rashawn Ross (The Dave Matthews Band) were next to join Soulive. Special guest Skerik completed the brass entourage and “Upright,” “Vapor” and “Flurries” delivered us a massively long horn-heavy rage. The various musicians on stage rotated solos starting with Skerik who inserted his wild element of experimental jazz while Rashawn Ross’s melting-pot experience defined his style per song. Everyone continued through the trio of songs jumping from tambourines to maracas and other various percussion instruments filling all voids with extremely tight and organized sound.  Special guest and opener Zach Deputy lead the stage for his original, “Thrill is Gone.” To see Deputy explore his guitar talents with a full band is quite a different experience. His sound completely changes because he isn’t worrying about layering the beats, the bass or the horns. The massive crew on stage closed the set with “Aladdin” and the always funky “El Ron.”

The entire Lettuce ensemble (The Bowlive Horns including Skerik, guitarists Eric Krasno and Adam Smirnoff, bassist ED “Jesus” Coomes, and drummer Adam Deitch) raged the stage for the second set kicking it off with “King of the Burgs.” Rashawn Ross lead with a killer trumpet solo while drummer Adam Deitch made his presence known after Alan Evan’s domination of the kit in the earlier set. Last night was an amazing night for drumming fans, to be sure. The funkiest band on the planet followed last night’s rage by releasing more new songs off their upcoming album to an eager, elevated crowd. On Tuesday night, we heard “Mean Fonk,” “Lettuce Play,” and the jokingly named tune “Brooklyn Bowler,” a word play on the wonderful venue housing Soulive’s ten-night residency and actually titled”Bowler,” reflecting organist Neal Evan’s signature hat. Last night the explosive audience members (and iClips.net online viewers) jumped and danced their bodies weary to new tunes, “Bump Tubby,” “Fast Kraz,” “Ghost of Jupiter,” and “New GoGo.” Alecia Chakour joined the stage for to sing the sultry “Do Ya Thing,” a first time cover for both Chakour and Lettuce. Flautist Kofi Burbridge played throughout the entire set while Skerik could be seen enjoying the set by the sound board. ED “Jesus” Coomes’ bass playing was a crucial element to the entire set as his glasses literally fogged up from the heat coming off his playing. Toubab Krewe’s Luke Quartana was back for a second night front and center on stage with his Djembe drum for “New GoGo,” while saxophonist James Caseyplayed the congas with drum sticks. Krasno was nowhere to be seen for this tune while the stage exploded into one of the sickest 11-piece percussion rages this super fan has had the privilege of watching. The amazing, soulful voice of Nigel Hall helped close the set with “Making my Way,” into a Curtis Mayfield medley of “We’re a Winner” and “Move on Up!”


Two nights into the second week and already we have had two surprise guests, Oteil and Kofi Burbridge, on top of the amazing special guests, Zach Deputy, Skierk and Lettuce. Soulive changes things up tonight with the invitation extended to Citizen Cope & Alice Smith, the legendary funk bassist George Porter, Jr. (The Meters), drummer Billy Martin (Martin, Medeski and Wood), Alecia Chakour Band, and ?uestlove (The Roots) on the 1’s and 2’s. RAGE!!

One of the most beautiful things about music is its ability to connect to us on so many levels.  There is the connection between the audience and the musicians; we love them, we hate them, we worship them, we envy them, we listen to them and we critique them.  There is the connection between the musicians on stage as they smile at each other, follow and lead the jam getting lost in the music as we do.  There is a connection to the music through emotions, as the songs make us weep, laugh, get angry, get hyper or sullen. Physically, we dance to the grooves and our connection to the venue and our fellow audience members becomes established as we release our energy onto them.  Finally, the better the group is, the harder, deeper and more intense the connections prove to be.

The creation of the Tedeschi/Trucks Band connects very deeply with me on all those levels.  Derek Trucks is my favorite guitarist alive.  When he takes a solo, I many times lose my shit.  He is still the only guitarist who can make me cry in the middle of a rock song, any song for that matter.   Yes, we all know I cry freely when music touches me but no one can get me going as quickly as Derek can.

Susan Tedeschi is hands down my favorite singer in our scene.  When I broke off my engagement a few years ago, her music/voice played an intense part in my healing process.  Specifically, go check out her cover of Bob Dylan’s “Baby, Don’t Think Twice.”  Tell me you don’t LOVE that song!

I was privileged enough to meet them both on their tour bus at Mountain Jam last year and was able to yet again, build another connection as I thanked them for their music, spoke with them about NY living and just hung with them as “regular” people, not the famous musicians I had come to love and worship after finding their talent in 2000.

At the end of the day, the beauty of this group lies in its greatest connection: LOVE.  Love is the deepest connection two people can have.  Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks are married.  A connection so great and built on love’s foundation.  As well, Derek and Susan chose their line-up wisely, picking from musicians they themselves love and whose talent they feel is outstanding.  When you mix love and music you get The Tedeschi/Trucks Band!

The Highline Ballroom was packed! Not surprisingly, the performance had sold out within days of tickets going on sale. The venue withheld the tickets for pick up at the club box office to deter ticket reselling, something I hadn’t dealt with before. There was no opening band and the band took to the stage a little after 8pm to a crazy excited audience.

I’d say that 75% of the audience were 40+ yr old men who needed a fix of their bro-crush from The Allman Brothers Band.  Personally, I wondered how many of these men truly cared about anyone else on stage.  Certainly, The Allman Brother’s fans noticed the amazing Oteil Burbridge  on stage.  I know I did. What a line up.  Oteil’s brother, Kofi, took his rightful place behind the keyboard.

As all Derek and Susan projects, Mike Mattison was on backup vocals.  Then, there was Mark Rivers, someone who I had never heard of before and I can’t seem to find any information on. Send me a link if you find something! Their voices blended seamlessly with Susan’s but I didn’t really get a full effect from them closer to the end of the performance.

Tyler Greenwell, an alumni of the school of Colonel Bruce Hampton, made himself known on stage throughout the whole night with his thick drumming. Great musicality.  JJ Johnson, the second drummer on stage, was a new name to my ears.  His latest venture has been touring as John Mayer’s drummer.  I’ve always loved John Mayer’s songwriting and lyrics but it stops with his music.  Let’s hope JJ Johnson isn’t as much as a douche as Mr. Mayer like to portray himself.  I am sure he isn’t because only great karma gets you a post within the band of one of these magnificent musicians!

The horn section was good. I want to say out of this world but I couldn’t really feel anything from two out of the three horn players.  Sadly, I can’t find any mention of the names of the horn section either and the only person I recognized on stage was Maurice Brown on trumpet. Maurice was the horn player who throw it down until the encore.  He was the stand out of the horn section as he ripped open his solo on Uptight (video below), as he twirled his trumpet to the beat like a cowboy does a gun and how he got down dancing completely into the groove when the music moved him. He is a pleasure to watch just like Oteil.  Great stage presence.  Each of the musicians on stage were connected to Derek and Susan in some way but I believe Maurice Brown is the only member not to have played with them before.

Kicking the set off with the instrumental Five Minute Rule, the entire 11-piece ensemble warmed up their instruments and busted out a bit of their chops.  They were just itching to release their music upon us.  They covered epically jamming covers like The Meter’s funky Just Kissed My Baby and Jimi Hendrix’s Manic Depression with Oteil on vocals. At a point in the song, the members on stage back off as Kofi and Oteil were being spotlighted.  My eyes followed Derek and Susan as they sat down on some speakers.  I watched Susan sit down, put her hand on her husband’s leg and smiled deeply into his eyes and mouthed “Hi!”  It was so touching. During the drummer focus at the end of  Stevie Wonder’s Uptight (Outta Sight), both drummers gave us a taste of their talent.  Combined, we were delivered a sense of their sound and sensitivity.


The  group sang a number of songs from their new album, Revolver.  The soulful Love Has Something Else To Say was beautiful. As well, The Derek Trucks Band cover, Midnight in Harlem resonated through the venue as Susan’s emotive vocals carried it away.

Sly Stone’s Simple Song brought the absolute heat.  Susan Tedeschi and Mike Mattison’s vocals was sultry and possessive of the energy in the room.  Mattison’s standing out more for this one, however.  Kofi Burbridge brought it up with the keys. Kofi just sounds better every time I hear him.  Sadly, I don’t think I ever heard the flute.  Maurice Brown took the best solo of the night from the horn players yet again, destroying the funky rock song with a huge jazz0filled solo.  And behind it all, Oteil’s bass line could be heard solid and full of get down funky.  They killed this song!!!

The set ended with Herbie Hancock’s Space Captain. Might have been the greatest, most upbeat song of the night!! The spotlight was on Kofi Burbridge as he busted out the intro on keys and was showcased throughout the song in his solos.  Susan’s vocals filled in the rest and the drummers made themselves known. But it wasn’t until Derek Trucks ripped us his solo that I really lost it, weeping openly a few measures in.  Derek Trucks shred our faces off!! Oteil followed me and went, well, nuts.  bouncing all over the stage and dancing with his bass!!  The man is brilliant.   I lost my shit in the second row as I saw the musicians on stage putting on their rager faces and feeling Derek as well. Derek’s ever composed, precise, intense playing makes him one of the world’s greatest guitarist and a master at the slide.  Susan threw her hands up in praise toward him and at that moment Highline Ballroom was Church and Derek Trucks was God!!

With the ending of such a killer performance they could have gone out on that note and still gotten rave reviews.  KILLER ending to a set but the audience wanted more!!  Before the rest of the band came back to the stage, Kebbi on saxophone player began to rage.  Kebbi ripped right into a hyper jazz solo which eventually was supplemented by JJ Johnson on drums. And yes, he was great! I also gotta say the saxophonist killed that part of the show so I take back what I said about Maurice owning the horn section all night.  Eventually, everyone rejoined and the danceable funky blues song, Bound For Glory, the only song from their new album that is available for download, was the last song played.

The Tedeschi/Trucks band is absolutely brilliant.  Having the past connections of playing with each other behind them, they are way past the rehearsal stage in their third show.  With musicians with never ending talent  and an amazing set list, the night’s performance was a solid treat for the middle of the week.  Listening to this entire set and watching Derek Trucks, I realized that I hadn’t seen him so spirited in a long, LONG time.  His smile was evident throughout the night as was his Rager face!  Susan Tedeschi got me so into the mood that it brought tears to my eyes.  I hadn’t felt this touched by music in a long, long time.

I thought the show/band was great — but with that much talent up there, how could they not be? If I had a criticism, it’s that the show was too short… we want more! ~ Jonathon A.

Day I Review: Mountain Jam VI @ Hunter Mountain, NY (06.04.10)

Motto for the weekend:

Rage, Recover, Rinse, & Repeat.

 

I woke up around 11am, not necessarily wanting to get out of bed but knowing I had a day of music to fully ingest.  Right off the bat, I wake up, shower, and try to gather the troops.  The worst possible gathering movement ever.  Recovery was still in progress.  So, I sat on the porch, letting the sun hit my face.  I could hear Zach Deputy on the stage and I knew that it was time to start the day.  Eventually, the two and four legged animals from the house were moving towards Zach‘s cheery voice.

THE ONE MAN BAND OF AWESOME!!!  What can I say about him that I haven’t already said 100 times over in previous reviews.  Sadly I had arrived towards the end of his set but not before seeing Zach bring us the sun.  Plain and simple.  Utilizing his feet, hands, breath, hair, whatever…he manipulates all the gadgets on stage, all the instruments, the whole time piecing together a musical puzzle with the end result in making us smile so wide…literally calling out the sun.  And it worked as he played SunshineZach‘s beaming smile beamed down on us as bright as the sun did at that moment.

What a wonderful way to start the day.  This was good wake up music.  Not a lot of fan fare, not too loud.  Just one guy, his voice, and his imagination.  Slightly soothing for those recovering and just upbeat enough for those wanting to get the dance party started.  It was real cool to watch/listen Zach from far away.  It totally didn’t sound like one person was making all that fun time sound.  I laid on the blanket, gathering my mind.

I stepped closer for a few pictures and as I turned around to head back up the mountain to relax with the Karma Wash, I spot my Banana Mafia friend.  He just totally cracks me up and makes me smile.  I love his energy and his ability to rage full face at any minute.  We share similar taste in socks too.  🙂

During Zach Deputy, friends from all over had gathered at the Karma Wash for our good mornings, daily karma scrubbing, hugs and getting our daily plans straight.  Seeing how well rested and clean we were, a few friends took off to our house to utilize the showers.  And then it was time for the London Souls, a New York City based band, to rock our socks off.

It was SO HOT!  I was in a bikini and running shorts and I was still super hot.  I started The London Souls set dancing alone.  It didn’t take long for my buddies to hear the music and start appearing from various sides of the mountain.  I love my festival friends because the hugs and dancing once again commenced.

Rocking their shades and their poofy, out of control hair, the London Souls changed my opinion of them right on the spot.  I have always had my reservations about them since being introduced to them during Soulive‘s Bowlive run at Brooklyn Bowl.  They wail but I always  felt like they were screaming at me with their instruments when they played and for me that isn’t how I like to enjoy my music.  But now, I have figured out why it was overwhelming me.  By pulling away from the front of the stage and being able to watch them from a distance, the sound was raging but still softer and magnificent.  I was able to distinguish the sounds from all three players. They really killed it.  They truly are rock-and-roll ragers.

They also caught my ear with a song that rang: “Are you going to let your man push you around. You better stand up.”  Uplifting lyrics.  I love lyrics that empower women.

“Our songs are usually inspired by any kind of conflict,” says Kiyoshi.  “While they all mean something different, lots of our songs are about girls!”

The London Souls screamed like Van Halen and WAILED! I got locked into to Tash’s insane vocals and shredding of his guitar.  The stand out of the band, in my opinion.  Clearly, I do enjoy being FAR away from this band and listening rather then up front being raged at.  Probably one of the first times ever that this scenario has arisen.

The last song revolved around there being a “text-in” vote for a cover song that they were to perform at Mountain Jam.  The choice was AC/DC’s It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll)!  Seriously, every time I walk away from their sets, I am more and more impressed with their Jimi Hendrix style antics and full bodied rage.  Kickass LS!

Even though the Drive By Truckers are considered ragers by many people, in my opinion, they were a much more mellow change in music after The London Souls.  They started off with a song all about a good night of drinking called The Fourth Night Of My Drinking.  I figured they would just rage my face off with a song like that but the Drive By Truckers are hit or miss with me.  They border on a rocky country vibe and that is hard for me to love.  But the main reason is that the lead singer, Patterson Hood, has wretched voice.   I mean, I know his father is famous and all but that doesn’t mean it runs in the family all the time.  Sometimes Hood truly CAN NOT sing.

I have sobered up considerably in the past few years and I am finding that bands I used to think sounded great really don’t sound all that hot.  I was listening to the recording from Levon Helm’s Birthday set and it sounds horrible when Hood sings his part. Now, from a rager’s stand point he is awesome I suppose.  He can down a 5th of whiskey and still rage it on stage, though, not always in key, pitch or tone.  I rage, but no longer like him so alas, I guess that just standing and remembering the lyrics used to count for something to me.  Absolutely not good enough anymore.

The 5th song, Santa Fe, totally caught my ear.  It was here that Patterson Hood wished for Simone Felice to get better as he had recently fallen ill.  It was a pretty rad song but the vocals are still a little shot.  The band is ok if Hood just doesn’t sing.  It was also here that I took shots of a darling little family enjoying the Karma Wash.  As well, I noticed photographer Michael Patrick shooting & interviewing the Karma Wash.  It turned out he was covering Mountain Jam for FestivalFamily.com.  The Karma Wash is LEGIT!!!

David Hood, Patterson Hood’s bass-playing father, came out and joined the Truckers for Respect Yourself and I enjoyed David immensely.  However, during Mercy’s Bucket and I decided I had had enough.  There was no comparison to the raging between Patterson Hood and Tash from the London Souls.  The London Souls brought us a face melting rage and Drive By Truckers brought the vibe down for me rather unexpectedly.  But, in less then 30 minutes, we would be dropped a funk bomb by Lettuce who was about to rage on the West Stage at 3:30pm! OMG it was about to be SO ON!!

This was the first time I had ever seen Jesus Coomes (bass).  I had heard so much about him and was thrilled to finally be able to hear him wail live.  On his Yamaha 6-String (I think), Jesus truly does just bring it home.  He feels the music and , man, you can see it.  Having researched him heavily before seeing him, Coomes has dipped his talented fingers into all genres of music and has an ear for the bass and production that has allowed him to thrive in the music industry.

The second song was a personal favorite and the crowd went wild as Sam Huff’s Flying Ragin’ Machine raged the horns up to the highest points of the mountain where people could be seen dancing their asses off.  I encourage you all to just go buy Lettuce‘s Rage cd right now.  And I will let Jesus tell you why:

Kofi Burbridge joined in on The Last SuppitAdam Deitch stood out on drums as he smashed the rage out of his kit. Krasno then introduced the group on stage.  Neal Evans raged the MOOG synth bass and tappin his feet to bring in the familiar tune, Kings of the Burgs.   A few minutes in and the horns join!  Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis blasted their way in and out of the song as Kofi fluttered his flute into the mix.

Half way through the song the crowd screams as I see Derek Trucks plugging in.  Krasno shouted, “We got a couple more people we got to bring up here, man.  There’s just some heavy shit going on around here.”  Oteil Burbridge and Nigel Hall joined the stage to complete a full round power house of talent and rage.  “Mountain Jam, Where ya at?” scream Nigel and they fly into Move On Up…(like Susan Tedeschi told you to).  Now, it goes from good to GREAT!

With Nigel Hall on vocals and Susan Tedeschi backing him on the chorus, Move On Up closed the funkified set.  Oteil Burbridge took a solo and scatted on the bass.  Deitch backing on the drums was perfection.  Kofi fluttered behind his brother, Oteil.  Finally, Derek raged a solo before Nigel sang the last verse adding his signature scream.  FULL FREAKING FUNKING RAGE! I had been fully melted into a puddle of happy.

“Every festival always needs a banjo!” shouts Jeff Austin (I think) and again, the sound over the mountain shifted into an entirely different vibe, an entirely different musical world.  It is always nice to hear Jeff Austin play his banjo.  He is just amazing even though he sometimes overpowers and over solos.  But still, one of the best in my opinion.

The rain came during YMSB but we didn’t move.  They continued to play and we continued to dance.  It was almost fitting, to be dancing in the rain, with our shoes off, dancing like hillbillies on a mountain.  I love that I could rage with a funk band less than one hour earlier and now was LOVING the Bluegrass vibe.  There are so many people who just can’t understand it.  Like Fusion, they just don’t get it, they can’t wrap their heads around the sound, around the simple yet complicated way the notes are put together.  During the last song, Death Trip, Warren Haynes came out and assisted YMSB in playing one hell of a closing for their set.

During Dave Mason‘s set, my buddy and I decided to check out the lovely art installations at the top of the mountain.  Mountain Jam invited John (?) and Cappy Franti (Michael Franti’s son) from San Fransisco, as well as other artists, to create interactive works of art.

The installations began at the start of the festival and the creativity flowed throughout the three days. The end result being three pieces of interactive art work that created seating, beauty and imagination.  The collective artists inserted their visions through a spray paint medium (I think) onto the structures.  They were really gorgeous to look at.

Wookies were sprawled out all over the wooden structures.  Passed out or just relaxing watching the intense scene of people down the mountain.  Parents and their children were utilizing the space to save their children’s eardrums as the parents sat there without their own ear-protectors on.  I always wear earplugs, especially while up front at festivals. But just look at the scene from where Murray and I sat and listened to Dave Mason and make new friends.  GORGEOUS!

The only thing I knew about Dave Mason was that he is an old member of Traffic. As soon as I was told that, the song Feelin’ Alright popped in my head.  It was the only one I could recall and at some point in the set, he played it.  Woot!  I didn’t really pay attention to Dave because I was raging all over the art installations with Murray, making new friends (Hi Carsten!) and getting lost inside the art maze.  We had WAAAAY to much fun in there posing for pictures, enjoying the colors and shapes. Simple pleasures, but our minds sets were prepared for exactly what we were doing.  From time to time, I would hear some intense raging coming from the stage.  As we left the Maze, I entered an entire dancing mountain.

Everyone had recovered and the evening’s party had commenced.  We hung out with our new friends for the rest of the set and knew that next time, I would sit and really pay attention to Dave Mason.  He was amazing from what I heard and I wish I had heard more.  And then front the top of the mountain, I heard Susan’s voice and flew past Murry to the front of the stage so fast that she hadn’t even hit the chorus of the song by the time I got to the center front. My second favorite group of the day was about to bring it.

I had been waiting for this moment ALL YEAR!!!  I wasn’t able to go to Wanne Music Festival and they had yet to come to New York City.  This was a BIG deal to me.  Susan Tedeschi is my #1 favorite southern soul singer.  A singer who has touched my life in ways that no one would ever understand.  Then you have Derek Trucks, just the greatest guitarist on the planet. He too lifts my soul up when it’s on the ground.  In my Top 3 List for favorite living guitarists hands down.  Tyler Greenwell and Duane Trucks are out of this world.  The Burbridge Brothers, well, they just wail.  And, well, download the set or go see them!  If I was loaded like Donald Trump, I would pay to have this band play for me once a day.  Probably every morning, to wake me up with a soulful smile!

Love Has Something To Say started their set with Susan bringing me her soulful voice immediately. That voice. It hits your guts.  I feel a change in my mind and body WHENEVER her voice hits me.  I am not a fan, I am a freak. LOL!!   It’s so weird how she does that to me.  Then Mike Mattison sang out a chorus as well and I was thrown back to college when I first heard that scratchy voice. Finally, Nigel Hall rang out a bit and the group gathered back into a collective after a Derek solo.

I thought that song would be the song that started off the energy curve that would continue to rise with each song but Midnight in Harlem slowed the vibe down considerably.  Nothing wrong with that.  They had the mountain swaying in unison.  Even with it being a calm song, Derek made his guitar softly rage into his solo…making my face tighten, my eyes close and my head thrown back feeling like my body would melt into the earth as I swayed.

Susan’s voice was yet again showcased through  Love Was All In My Mind but it was her guitar playing that made me scream here. Not as good as her husband but one HELL OF A RAGER!!  It made me wonder if they sit together and just jam out in their living room while their kids run around playing.  How wonderful.  There was deliciously cute banter between Susan and Oteil.  There is friendship and love within those glances.  Such energy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE watching Oteil Burbridge play his bass.  The smile on that man is intoxicating. It’s honest and pure, just like his playing.  I’ve Got A Feeling was the same thing with excellent Susan vocals and I let me feelings take me over, dancing around in front with my fellow strangers, singing with their “Oh Yeahs!”

Derek played through Nobody’s Free, with not one, but two broken stings, waving away the stage tech to complete the song.  The mountain erupted in an applause after this song that kind of shook my core.  I was so happy I was not alone in ADORING this group.  Susan introduced the band after a few more songs, describing everyone with a little snippet of love before they went into Don’t Drift Away.  Derek pulled out a solo here that ripped out my heart.  And for the first time that weekend I was brought to tears.  Uncontrollable streams of happiness down my cheeks.  I held it in as best as I could but I sit here looking at my notes with dots of smeared ink and I smile.  I was surrounded by strangers who were all there for the same reason as I was.  And here was this magnificent guitarist doing something he does every single day, bringing people to the edge of emotion.  That thought alone made me shine.

It was a slow, soulful start with Standing on the Edge of Love with the end of the song consisting of Derek’s raging guitar bringing the mountain UP! UP! UP.  Oteil RIPPED the bass up during Serve It Up and then Susan’s adorable speaking voice asked us how we were and thanked Warren Haynes for having them at the Festival.  Next up, Blind Crippled and Crazy was a familiar tune that got people singing around me. Mike giving us his sexy, smooth falsetto and Kofi Burbridge soloing on the organ with a vibe that made you want to get DOWN.

After the The Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band set, I received a call from Nigel Hall, a dear friend of mine since Jam Cruise, who I hadn’t seen in a minute.  We caught up about his tour with Derek and Susan while we walked around, finally unloading his bags from their tour bus.  After a minute, Nigel boarded the bus and popped his head out telling me to come on in.  That glorious man brought me on the tour bus and sitting there were Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

I was momentarily speechless as Nigel introduced me.  Completely frozen as I bypassed Derek completely to shake Susan’s hand.  All I could utter was “Your music saved me last year.  You are a hero of mine.”  But before I could get it all out, my voice cracked at “hero” and my eyes watered up as I was completely overwhelmed in the moment.  It took all my might just to hold it together.  She noticed my emotion, smiled and gave me a hug, calling me a “sweet dear.”  I didn’t take pictures, I didn’t do anything.  I just silently lost my mind trying not to let me emotions over take me.  You have to remember that we are in Day II now of the festie which means little sleep and lots of raging has already takin place. I was in little control of my emotions but held it together.

So we sat, Derek, Susan, Nigel and I, chilling for about 20 minutes talking about the set, their tour, my NY stomping grounds, and much more.  At one point Derek turns to Susan and says, “You and Karen should exchange numbers.  We are always on the Upper East Side.”  Honestly, I don’t think I can describe in words my reaction to this statement.  First, I thought, what the HELL would she want with my number!  Then I thought, who cares, I love her and she can have anything of mine she wants.

It was at that moment that I realized that as much as I ADORE/LOVE/WORSHIP Derek Trucks and consider him one of the greatest guitar players in the world, it was Susan who truly was my passion on that bus.  It was her cover of Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right that truly grounded me and kept me sane in one of the worst times of my life.  It’s why I broke down meeting her, all those feelings flooding back…knowing if all that evil hadn’t happened to me, I never would have made it on that bus to meet her.  And I healed, just a little bit more… my heart opened up a little bit wider.  And then finally we said our goodbyes.  *** NIGEL!  THANK YOU SO MUCH for knowing how important that was to me and for making it happen.  THANK YOU!!! ***

The Lettuce crew was staying off site and so we took a little ride through the mountain and raged at the Villa Vosilla for a bit.  Ate some dinner and relaxed in these ridiculous rooms that had me thinking I was in Alice in Wonderland.  Yeah!  Fully raged.  We didn’t get back to the Festival until 11pm, just in time for the beginning of the second Gov’t Mule set.   But missing the first Mule set was 110% worth it.  The laughter on the ride back from the hotel alone made up for missing the music.

When we stopped at a check point, the police officers heckled us a bit.  Our driver explained we needed to get to the festival and that this was a band.  Finally, the officer asked the name of the band.  Oh man. This was so good.  Neal Evans leans over and says, “Lettuce.”  The officer stared blankly for a minute and repeats “Lettuce” as if he must have misunderstood.  “Lettuce. Did you say Lettuce?”  “Yes,” says practically the whole van.  Inside my head, I was laughing my ever loving mind off.  The officer clearly thought we were herbs and finally let us pass.  If he only knew the talent that was in that van…

I got back to the festival in time to rage the second set with my friends.  However, I spent most of the first bit looking for them.  Everyone’s phones were dying and my friends were up front amongst the  masses.  It didn’t take long before they found ME wondering around.  I was pretty much in full face melting stance at this point and not taking notes.  Just thrashing around the mountain dancing with my friends.  All my favorite all stars joined the stage for this set and I was finally able to see Warren play with some favorites: The Shady Horns (Sam Kininger on Alto, Ryan Zoidis on Tenor Sax), Eric Krasno, and Jackie Green.  I am not going to break it all down, you can download the set.  But I will tell you that the encore of their set was a cover of Pearl Jam’s BLACK and it was awesome!!!

Lettuce brought the funk for the last time at 1m inside at the Colonel’s Stage while Dark Star Orchestra raged the Mainstage outside on the Mountain.  I never once left the front of the Colonel’s stage. I couldn’t as I was glued to their sound. I was glued to their energy.  I had absolutely no desire to see Dark Star even though I dig ’em.

Tonight we danced. We danced so hard.  I was barely wearing anything, just a bikini and shorts, and I was dripping in FUNK!  The good kind even though it was pretty hot! 🙂   Somewhere in the middle of the music, my buddy threw a head of Lettuce up on stage screaming, “We love You!”  And it was true. My friends and I, a group of people who’s musical opinions I greatly value, are smitten with the Royal Family. Didn’t you know?  😉

I could give you another run down on the Late night Lettuce rage but it would just be more of the same up from there.  Gushing over how much we danced, raged, melted, and smiled.   How amazing each player is and how TIGHT they all sound together.  The group is just TIGHT.  The Shady Horns play so impeccably in sync.  But I won’t.  I will stop right there and only say that Warren Haynes joined in towards the end of the set.  Song #15 as the recording places it but as I do not listen to the recordings or read the reviews for shows until I write my own articles, I don’t know if it’s correct.  And since I didn’t take note…

After the set, we walked up the mountain to the VIP tents and hung out for a few more hours with friends.  Winding down, playing guitars and with lights.  The sun started to come up and we knew it was time for bed.  It’s the WORST trying to fall sleep as the sun is coming up.  If you can get to bed before you see it, you are golden. Otherwise, it throws things completely off. My girl and I walked home in the misty rain and I hoped it would stop by afternoon when I awoke.  I wanted more then anything to make The Bridge the next morning at 12pm but it was never going to happen.  I finally fell asleep at 6am.  When my body hit the bed, it was probably the most comfortable bed in the world at that moment. I know yall feel me.  This festival was rockin’ our worlds.  However, I had to keep it together because I had one more day of insanity…are you having fun with me so far??
